What makes the .308 stripper clips so hard to find? Well, the US military does not shoot very much of this ammo since switching to the M4 and M16 rifles unless it’s on links for their machine guns. There are still some applications to include the designated marksman rifles that are magazine fed in .308 caliber but they are relatively limited in circulation compared to the M4 family of rifles. What’s even rarer than M14 rifles in current service is finding stripper clipped 7.62x51 ammunition on stripper clips in bandoliers.
We are not aware of any 7.62x51 /.308 ammunition being produced in this configuration within the last ten years which is evident as the majority of online military surplus retailers are out of stock stripper clips and bandoliers. Stripper clips and bandoliers in .308 are also a rare find on the gun show circuit. Even if you can find them, it is rare to find a dealer with a sufficient quantity at a reasonable price.
The M14 stripper clip repack kits available at CleanAmmoCans.com include the more recent six pocket bandolier variant. Each pocket is intended to hold two, five round .308 / 7.62x51 stripper clips for a total of 10 rounds of ammunition per pocket and 60 rounds of ammunition per bandolier. Within each pocket is a cardboard silencer insert with one stripper clip guide and safety pin per bandolier. Mil-spec M80 stripper clip 7.62x51 ammo ships from Lake City in the M2A1 size ammo can with 420 rounds per can which is seven, 60 round bandoliers.
